Our 2024 Historic African American Bus and Walking Tours offer a number of opportunities to witness significant sites from the 19th and 20th centuries. The goal of our tours is to empower participants to learn more about Dallas’s African American heritage. Tour lengths extend from 2 to 5 hours. Our 2 hour mini bus tours highlight fewer sites, but are more comprehensive in nature and cost $30 per person. Our 4 hour tours give an in depth view of various Freedman's Town sites and cost $40. Tour #1 will include stops at Freedman’s Cemetery, Booker T. Washington High School, Moorland Branch YMCA, and the sites of Black-owned businesses in the State-Thomas neighborhood, plus additional sites.
Tour #2 will include stops at the Pittman Hotel/Knights of Pythias Temple, Bluitt Sanitarium, and sites related to legendary American jazz and blues icons, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Robert Johnson, plus additional sites .
Tour #3 will include stops at the Lynching of Allen Brooks Equal Justice Initiative Historical Marker at Main and Akard Streets, the 1910 Lynching of Allen Brooks Texas Historical Marker at the Old Red Courthouse, and Martyrs Park, future site of the Shadow Lines Monument, Jane Elkins and 1860 Lynching Historical Markers plus additional sites
Tour #4 will include stops in Tenth Street, one of Dallas's most endangered Freedman's Towns, information about William Brown Miller’s plantation mansion, Millermore, and those Miller enslaved in Oak Cliff, including Arch and Charlotte Miller, plus additional sites.
Tour #5 will include stops at the Juanita J. Craft Civil Rights House, Wheatley Place and Queen City Historic Districts, and the African American Museum, plus additional sites.
Tour #6 will include stops at White Rock Cemetery Garden of Memories, White Rock Chapel, Anderson Bonner Historical Marker and public art monument, Alpha, and Little Egypt, plus additional sites.
Our extended bus tours will include visits to Deep Ellum, Freedman’s Cemetery and Freedmantown, Tenth Street Historic District, Joppa, Bear Creek Community (Irving), and Freedman's Town sites. Cost: $50 per person.
